Background

The Calvert Marine Museum requests the use of State Program Open Space funds to facilitate the museum’s purchase of 1.1 acres of property at 215 Lore Road in Solomons, Maryland and to incorporate it into the museum’s campus.

Discussion

This property, situated immediately east of the Calvert Marine Museum, is integral to the Museum’s strategic plans and long-term expansion goals. Its acquisition will:  Provide vital space for future development, programming and community engagement opportunities.  Preserve and protect waterfront property adjacent to the Museum, safeguarding it for public benefit.  Ensure the Museums’s continued ability to serve as a leading cultural, educational and tourism asset for Calvert County. The Calvert Marine Museum is a cornerstone of heritage tourism in Calvert County, drawing tens of thousands of visitors annually, and contributing significantly to the local economy. Securing this property under county ownership will strengthen the Museum’s role as a premier destination while advancing the county’s goals for cultural preservation, tourism growth and economic development. This acquisition aligns with the museum’s current planning efforts and will support future expansion, enhancing its programs and services for the citizens and visitors it serves.
