Background
The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office headquarters at 30 Church St. in Prince Frederick, Maryland, was originally designed and built as a hospital in 1919. The facility is outdated, inadequate and does not meet current law enforcement standards. A new headquarters is needed to modernize operations, accommodate growth and provide a safer and more efficient facility for staff and the public.
Discussion
The Sheriff’s Office is Calvert County’s primary law enforcement agency, responsible for policing, investigations and public safety. In 2024, an Existing Conditions Report was completed by MW Studios, a Public Safety Architecture firm. The firm found the current building, “lacks the spatial size requirements needed to meet contemporary standards of the mission critical functions they perform.” The report gives an overall rating of “Poor”, one rating above “Defective.” The biggest area of concern being the poor conditions of the Property Room/Crime Lab. These areas are currently inadequate and deemed the highest priority in terms of needing new space. The Property Room/Crime Lab is considered Phase 1 of a new Sheriff’s Office. The Property Room/Crime Lab is proposed to be built on Dares Beach Road, on existing county property, behind the Harriett E. Brown Community Center. Conceptual designs are required to ensure the site and buildings meet all requirements. The estimate for the conceptual design is $60,000. To initiate the project in the most efficient way, we are requesting the funding be allocated from the Capital Contingency Fund prior to the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 budget year.
