Department of Community Resources: Community Development Block Grant Public Hearing

Background

In March 2025, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development announced $2 million in Community Development Block Grant COVID CV1.2 funding for one-time costs supporting food pantries and homeless shelters. On April 8, 2025, the Board of County Commissioners approved a grant application to fund eligible projects. Under the Community Development Block Grant Citizen Participation Plan, a second public hearing is required to provide an update on funded projects and closeout the award.

Discussion

On April 23, 2025, the county received notice that the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development awarded $88,568 to support three projects. All grant funds have been expended. Project updates are as follows: Project D – Ladies of Charity Calvert County ($35,000): Reimbursed the organization for the purchase of a walk-in refrigerator/freezer for its newly renovated food pantry. Beneficiary goals were met. Project E – Project ECHO, Inc. ($47,068): Purchased stackable washers and dryers, security cameras, and approved shelter supplies, including laundry and cleaning products. Cost savings were used for additional approved supplies. Beneficiary goals were met. Project F – Homeless Day Program & Shelter, 85 Main St ($6,500): Purchased a refrigerator, stove, stackable washers and dryers, and dishwasher for the future shelter location. Equipment is being stored in county facilities until the site opens. Cost savings were used for approved cleaning supplies. No beneficiaries have been served.
